What is Deep Vein Thrombosis and Why Should You Care?

April 17, 2025

The team at firstScanHealth understands that symptoms like leg pain or swelling can easily be brushed off as “nothing to worry about”, especially if life is busy. But sometimes, these signs could be pointing to something more serious, like Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

DVT is a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. It’s more common than many people realise, and left untreated, it can lead to life-threatening complications such as a pulmonary embolism.

We’re here to explain what DVT is, the symptoms to watch out for, and how you can take proactive steps to protect your health.

What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis happens when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a deep vein, typically in the calf or thigh. It can occur for a variety of reasons including after surgery, during long periods of immobility (like travel), or as a result of underlying health conditions.

According to the NHS, symptoms of DVT can include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the leg, especially in the calf or thigh
  • Swelling in one leg
  • Warmth in the affected area
  • Red or darkened skin

Not everyone with DVT has obvious symptoms, which is why early detection matters. Looking for early detection or want peace of mind? Take a look at our DVT scans.

Why DVT Shouldn’t Be Ignored

DVT can become life-threatening if the clot breaks loose and travels to your lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE). This is a medical emergency. Warning signs of a PE include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing (sometimes with blood). You can read more about this on the NHS Pulmonary Embolism page.

Certain risk factors make DVT more likely, including:

  • Recent surgery or hospitalisation
  • Long periods of inactivity (e.g., flights or bedrest)
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal contraception or HRT
  • Being overweight
  • A family history of blood clots
