🩺Regular screenings can catch serious issues early – often before symptoms appear.
Here are the essential health checks every man should get by decade to stay ahead of preventable problems.
20s
- 😉Sexual Health: It’s important to practise safe sex and keep an eye down below for any symptoms. Young people are at a much greater risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease (STI).
- 🍒Testicular Health: Each year in the UK, around 2,300 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer. Try and do a testicular self-examination every month. This helps you become familiar with your size and shape, making it easier to spot any changes.
- 🧠Mental Health: Your 20s come with emotional challenges & stress like career anxiety, uncertainty, body image and relationship problems. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you need help.
30s
- 🩸Blood Pressure: If you don’t know your numbers, it’s a good idea to get a blood pressure check. It’s impossible to know if your blood pressure is already high as there are often no symptoms. It’s better to detect issues sooner!
- 🥕Diet & Nutrition: Your diet can impact your energy levels, mood and fertility – all of which may be a priority in your 30s. Don’t forget to keep putting yourself first and make sure your diet is varied and rich in nutrients.
- 👨Male Hormones: In your 30s you might want to check your hormones for knowledge on your fitness and body composition, fertility or sexual health
40s
- 🩻Liver Health: Try to be aware of the long-term harmful effects of alcohol on your liver. Being overweight is another factor that can affect your liver health. Fatty liver disease can cause inflammation and scarring over time and should be dealt with early.
- 📈Diabetes Risk: Diabetes is becoming increasingly common. It’s particularly important to be aware of your risk if you have a family member with diabetes, carry extra weight, or have ever had high blood pressure, a heart attack or a stroke.
- 🫀Cholesterol: It’s really important to know your numbers as having high cholesterol significantly increases your risk of circulatory diseases like heart attacks and strokes.
50s
- 💦Urinary Symptoms & Prostate Health: Around 1 in 3 men over 50 years of age have urinary symptoms – most commonly because of an enlarged prostate. Symptoms can include weak urine flow, difficulty starting to pee, or a sudden urge to pee. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men so it’s important to get checked if you notice any unusual symptoms.
- 🫁Cardiovascular Health: Cardiovascular risk is based on factors including family history of heart disease, ethnicity, blood pressure, weight, smoking status and cholesterol levels. If you’re not sure of your risk, now is the time to find out
60+
- 🦴Bone Health: It’s not just women who are at risk of osteoporosis and around 1 in 5 men will break at least one bone due to the condition. It’s important to make sure you get enough calcium – supplements can help as it can be difficult to get enough from food and sunlight alone.
- 💩Bowel Health: From your 60s and beyond you’ll be invited to take part in screening programmes. As well as regular screening you can also look out for symptoms like blood in your stool, tummy pain or bloating brought on by eating, or a persistent change in bowel habits.
Don’t wait for symptoms – get informed, get screened, and stay ahead of your health at all stages of your life! 🔍
